How to deal with Frustration as an Artist

When the drawing or Sketching or Painting does not come out as we expect..!!!

When the painting doesn’t look so good as expected…!!!

Frustration is an emotional response to opposition related to disappointments. But it’s just a common feeling, as humans we need to deal with this to move forward.

As humans, we always seek something, to reach some goal, to reach a personal accomplishment, to get something we feel important.

There are many ways or many methods to accomplish them. But When we aim more at the Final result / only the Final Goal (just to accomplish) and when we feel it’s still so far and out of reach we feel frustrated..!!!, Yes that’s the FRUSTRATION..!!

Instead, we need to Focus on the process to reach it …!!!

When you are in Frustration ask these questions to yourself.

  • Am I greedy?
  • Without any efforts am I expecting results?
  • Am I on track? following the process? Or Skipping anything?
  • Does my ego hurts when I seek help from someone!!

Ask these questions to yourself and get the answer, and be clear about the cause of FRUSTRATION!!!

How to come out of Frustration:

  • Ask for Help!!, don’t stop yourself from seeking help from your mentors or your friends or anyone.
  • Get clarity on your goal, what you need to accomplish?
  • Breakdown the Big goals to smaller goals, try to achieve the Smaller ones First
  • Be honest in your efforts to achieve them!, Plan your schedule and make sure you practice daily to achieve those smaller goals
  • Show up your face to the drawing board or Sketchbook daily, even just for 30 min a day.
  • Don’t skip anything, As there are no shortcuts to success.
  • Just follow the process, in the end, if you succeed it’s GOOD!! If you fail it’s even GREAT!!, repeat the process.
  • When you are not aware of the process, When you don’t know the way to start your journey, you need guidance or a mentor, Attend a few workshops or classes and get to know how successful Artists are working and how they apply or deal with their works.
  • When Nothing is working just take a BREAK, Focus your mind at something else, Watch a movie, or a cartoon to have fun. Later get back to work.

REMEMBER It’s a JOURNEY, not a destination.

Make sure you Enjoy the JOURNEY.

Make sure you Enjoy the PROCESS.

Is Frustration Evil or bad? NO not at all, If you feel so you are wrong.

FRUSTRATION is needed to feel SATISFIED or to Feel PEACEFUL with what you accomplished…!! That’s the SUCCESS!!! That’s what we need to LEARN!!

I hope this article helps you to come out of frustration,

Happy Sketching

  1. This article really helped me since I was getting frustrated to work on a portrait and also with many other issues related to art and art materials. Not getting time to sit for my art work or art assignment also frustrates me… When i find little time I would not have interest.. or something like that happens… But one of point mentioned in the blog that to question ourself that ‘ am I greedy ??’is so apt. I found that I am greedy of learning everything.. and being impatient at times were making me more frustrated. Your article has covered almost all the points that I wanted. Thank u so much.. ?

Yes the frustration is quite possible when the stds we want to achieve is high. The article talks abt introspecting why we get frustrated is really a good idea to deal with it. Also to keep in mind that we need to train our eyes to see them rt and see the corrections and to have a good observation. Sometimes staring at the pic for hours also makes sense. I have maintained a journal on my process and journey into doing portraits. With the able guidance from the author of this article jp and my other teachers like Eby n Joseph I hope to achieve the standards I have dreamt of. Thanks for the article ?
